PROJECT QUANTUM LEAP
PROJECT FILE
The Artifact
A physical machine for a very personal threshold.
Project Quantum Leap is meant to exist outside the screen.
At its center is a physical artifact built around the retrofuturist language of Nuka-Cola, the changing light of an eclipse, and a clock that eventually stops counting down.
The artifact begins as a machine pointed toward the future.
After Reclamation Day, it becomes a machine for measuring what has been reclaimed.
01 // The Bottle
The visual centerpiece is a Nuka-Cola rocket bottle.
Two rocket-bottle editions help define the project’s visual language:
Nuka-Cola Quantum represents contained potential. Its cool cyan glow belongs to the period when Reclamation Day is still somewhere ahead.
Nuka-Cola Orange represents returning sunlight. Its warm color belongs to the period when the transition has moved through Totality and toward sunrise.
The relationship between them is not simply blue versus orange.
They represent two ends of a larger progression:
Quantum → First Light → Approaching Totality → Totality → Returning Light → Sunrise → Daylight
The physical artifact should be capable of expressing that entire progression.
For that reason, the bottle used as the illuminated centerpiece is intended to function as a translucent shell rather than as a permanently filled beverage container. Internal or base-mounted programmable lighting can then transform the same physical form as the system moves through its states.
The bottle remains recognizable.
The meaning of its light changes.
02 // The Light
Lighting is part of the instrument, not an ambient effect added afterward.
Each state should communicate something before the display is even read.
Quantum
Cool cyan and blue light.
The future exists, but it is still contained.
First Light
The first suggestion of warmth enters the system.
The transition has been authorized.
Approaching Totality
Color begins to retreat.
The visual system becomes quieter as the final operational threshold approaches.
Totality
The artifact reaches its darkest and most restrained state.
Light is minimal. Contrast becomes more important than saturation.
This is the threshold.
Returning Light
Warmth begins to reappear.
The previous chapter has closed, but Reclamation Day is still ahead.
Sunrise
Orange becomes dominant.
Twenty years have been fulfilled, and only the final days remain.
Daylight
The system reaches its brightest and warmest state.
Reclamation Day has arrived.
The future is no longer represented as something waiting in the distance.
It is here.
03 // The Instrument
The artifact needs to communicate time clearly enough to function as an actual instrument.
Before Reclamation Day, the primary display counts down toward the next meaningful objective.
The exact presentation can change with system state, but the central vocabulary remains:
DAYS / HRS / MIN / SEC
On Reclamation Day, the instrument reaches:
000 DAYS / 00 HRS / 00 MIN / 00 SEC
It remains there for the entire calendar day.
The machine has reached its objective.
Beginning the following day, the direction of time changes.
The display becomes:
TIME RECLAIMED
The long-term vocabulary becomes:
YEARS / DAYS / HRS / MIN
The machine no longer asks:
How much time remains?
It begins answering a different question:
How much time has been reclaimed?
04 // The Interface
Project Quantum Leap should remain understandable without requiring a phone, browser, or computer.
The physical interface is therefore intended to remain deliberately small.
The planned interaction model includes:
- a persistent numerical display
- programmable state lighting
- a primary illuminated physical control
- local timekeeping
- persistent state storage
- optional infrared interaction
- status or diagnostic information when needed
The main control should feel consequential without becoming theatrical.
This is not intended to become a control panel covered in switches simply because switches look interesting.
Every visible control should have a purpose.
Every light should communicate state.
Every display should communicate information.
05 // The Form
The finished artifact should feel like something that could plausibly exist somewhere between a personal scientific instrument, a piece of retrofuturist consumer technology, and a recovered object from the Fallout universe.
It should not look pristine simply for the sake of being pristine.
It should also not be distressed simply for the sake of looking post-apocalyptic.
The object is meant to accumulate its own history.
The rocket bottle provides the recognizable visual anchor. The enclosure, display, controls, labels, and lighting should support it rather than compete with it.
Fallout provides the visual vocabulary.
The object itself remains personal.
06 // The Digital Twin
The physical artifact and ReclamationDay.net are two expressions of the same system.
They should agree on the things that matter:
- the current phase
- the current state
- the next objective
- milestone dates
- the meaning of each visual state
- Reclamation Day behavior
- the transition to Time Reclaimed
The website can contain far more narrative and archival material than the physical artifact ever should.
The physical artifact has a different job.
It makes the state tangible.
Ideally, someone should be able to look at the bottle, its light, and its display and understand where Project Quantum Leap currently stands without opening the website.
07 // Build Status
The artifact is still in development.
The rocket-bottle editions establish the physical and visual foundation, while the electronics and enclosure remain part of the engineering process.
The current design direction includes:
CONTROLLER
ESP32-class microcontroller.
TIMEKEEPING
DS3231 real-time clock.
DISPLAY
Persistent numerical countdown and Time Reclaimed display.
LIGHTING
Addressable RGB lighting capable of expressing the full eclipse progression.
INPUT
Illuminated physical control with optional infrared interaction.
STATE
Local persistence so the artifact can recover its correct state after power loss or restart.
Several implementation details remain deliberately unresolved until the physical components can be tested together.
Those decisions belong to the build process.
The purpose does not.
Project Quantum Leap begins as a physical reminder that a threshold is approaching.
It survives that threshold so it can become something better.
A record of time no longer waiting to be reclaimed.
